How to Get Your Marriage License in Michigan

Before your elopement, you’ll need to apply for and receive a Michigan marriage license. Follow these simple steps:

1. Apply for Your Marriage License

Apply through the County Clerk’s Office in the county where one of you lives. If both applicants live outside Michigan, you must apply in the county where your ceremony will take place.

Many counties offer an online application to get started, but you may still need to visit the Clerk’s Office to complete the process and pick up your license.

2. Gather Required Documents

Bring the following:

• Valid driver’s license or state-issued ID

• Social Security numbers for both applicants

• Birth certificate information (requirements vary by county)

• Divorce decree paperwork if either person was divorced within the required timeframe

3. Pay the Marriage License Fee

The fee is typically:

• $20 for Michigan residents

• $30 for non-Michigan residents

4. Wait for Your License

Michigan has a 3-day waiting period after applying before your license can be used. Some counties allow this waiting period to be waived for an additional fee.

5. Pick Up Your License

Once your waiting period is complete, pick up your marriage license from the County Clerk’s Office. Your license is valid for 33 days from the date of application, so plan accordingly.

6. Bring Your License to Your Elopement

Bring your marriage license with you to your ceremony. Your officiant and witnesses (if required) will sign it after your ceremony, and it will then be returned to the County Clerk’s Office for processing.
